Scholarships

The mission of the Dr. Éva Kahán Foundation is to support socially disadvantaged young Hungarians — primarily of the Romani and Jewish minorities — who could not continue their studies without help, or could only do so with extreme difficulty, in starting their legal studies. Law students with good academic results are supported in the form of academic scholarships and tuition fee grants.

The Dr. Éva Kahán Foundation welcomes applications all year round:

  • from young adults completing their secondary education in the current year and wishing to enter higher education to study law, and
  • from students who have already started their legal studies but are unable to continue them without financial support, or could only do so with extreme difficulty.

Application documents have to be submitted in electronic format, sent to scholarship@evakahanfoundation.org by 31 January each year. During the evaluation process, the foundation will contact the applicants and the contact persons named by them.

The Dr. Éva Kahán Foundation will sign a contract with each selected applicant, in which the Foundation undertakes to pay the student's tuition fees, and in the case of tuition fee waiver, the amount determined by the Board of Trustees and the Academic Committee (maximum HUF 100 000/month). The support can be used for a total of 10 semesters.

Scholarship students of the Foundation receive benefits that enable them to use their time and energy exclusively for achieving academic success.

During the period of study, Foundation scholars must report on their progress in writing on a monthly basis, and occasionally in person. This is not expected in a formal way, but rather by describing any difficulties or successes that have arisen.

The Dr. Éva Kahán Foundation requires their scholarship students to promote and respect human rights, especially minority rights, in their professional and private lives alike.

Students who are about to take their secondary school final exams and wish to study law are required to submit the following documents:

  • a personal statement of maximum 500 words, in which they tell about why they want to study law and how they picture their life 10 years from now,
  • a document that can stand as proof of their disadvantageous financial situation,
  • the name and contact information of a teacher whom the Dr. Éva Kahán Foundation can contact during the selection process.

Students already studying law have to submit the following documents:

  • a filled in application form for current law students,
  • a CV in the form of an essay of maximum 500 words, in which they describe their previous studies and their family circumstances,
  • a personal statement of maximum 500 words, in which they tell about why they want to study law and how they picture their life 10 years from now,
  • If the applicant is an active member of any academic clubs or participates in volunteer work, a copy of relevant documents needs to be attached as proof.
  • If the applicant has produced any academic work or papers during their studies, these need to be attached in electronic format.
  • Applicants have to justify why and for how long they would like to receive scholarship and/or tuition fee support.
  • Applicants have to name one or more references who can provide information to the Dr. Éva Kahán Foundation on their previous academic performance.
